THE FERNWOOD COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
The Fernwood Community Association (FCA) plays an active role in Fernwood land use and development issues. We act as a liaison between the Fernwood community and the City of Victoria.
The Fernwood Community Association operates from a heritage building at 1923 Fernwood Road. We occupy a small front office on the main floor and the rest of the building including the Main Hall (formerly “Little Fernwood”, now “Paul Phillips”) and a boardroom are available for rental and community activities.
Groups using this building include Theatre Inconnu, Pandora Arts Collective, Cafe Sympatico, and Little Fernwood Gallery, along with several recovery support groups and one-off community rentals for events, art shows, independent theatre groups, meetings and celebrations.
The FCA operates two Community Allotment Gardens in Fernwood. One is the Fernwood Community Garden on Chambers St. The FCA sublets a portion of this space to the Victoria Compost Education Centre, which itself was once a project of the FCA and is now a successful independent organization in its own right. Earthbound Community Allotment Garden on Garden St. is the location of the other FCA site.
At the corner of Chambers & Gladstone is Spring Ridge Common(s), a Community Urban Food Forest / Permaculture Demonstration Garden which the FCA initiated in 1999 and leased from School District 61 from 1999 to May 2007. The current leaseholder is the Fernwood Neighbourhood Resource Group, who have also committed to maintaining it as an accessible, permaculture green space for the community.
We are now one of the sponsors of the Fernwood Community Mapping Project. You can read about how this exciting community project grew at the Fernwood Then & Now page. (See Fernwood Community Map under WHAT’S NEW below.)
The FCA thanks the City of Victoria for their grant of $3000 to hire a volunteer coordinator for the Fernwood Community Garden and Earthbound Gardens.
